Pope Resigns, Lightning Strikes The Vatican

Hours after Pope Benedict’s resignation on Monday, lightning struck St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. While I guess I was expecting more news from media outlets on it and “message from above” fare, there really isn’t much to say, except that it happens. There was a thunderstorm in Rome that night. Structures with lightning rods get hit. The Empire State Building takes, on average, 100 hits a year. Ditto for the CN Tower. Lightning travels to the shortest path from the cloud (hence tall towers), and while the Basilica isn’t considered tall, it’s one of the tallest structures in its area. There is something else, though – before Monday, it doesn’t look like there are any previous photos on Google images of lightning striking the Vatican. Hey, it’s fun to wonder.
